Chapter and section verified against FAA-H-8083-31B, 2023 edition, on 28 August 2026. Page numbers are deliberately not cited: they move between printings, and a citation that rots silently is worse than a coarser one that stays true. Checked by our handbook citation check against our index of the handbook's chapters and sections.
| Elements | The ACS asks for | In the handbook | Where in FAA-H-8083-31B | What it does not give you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
K1–K4 |
Components and fluids; operation; servicing; inspection, check and troubleshooting | System architecture, component function | Ch. 12 — Aircraft Hydraulic Systems; Hydraulic Fluid; Types of Hydraulic Fluids; Reservoirs; Pumps | Pascal and force multiplication — GEN-J Concepts §3 |
K5–K7 |
Pneumatic types and components; pneumatic servicing; accumulators | Accumulator types and charging | Ch. 12 — Aircraft Pneumatic Systems; Pneumatic Systems; Pneumatic System Components; Accumulators; Types of Accumulators; Pneumatic Power System Maintenance | Why an accumulator is dangerous. AF-F Concepts §1 |
K8, S2, S3, S16 |
Seals, packings, backup rings, and fluid–seal compatibility | Seal types and materials | Ch. 12 — Seals; Seal Materials; Packings; V-Ring Packings; Backup Rings | Why the wrong fluid destroys the wrong seal. AF-F Concepts §2 |
K9 |
Hoses, lines and fittings | — | — | Taught in GEN-D |
K10, K11, S5, S6 |
Regulators, restrictors, valves; filter maintenance | Component function and servicing | Ch. 12 — Control Valves; Flow Control Valves; Pressure Control Valves; Shuttle Valves; Filters; Filter Units; Maintenance of Filters | — |
R1, R2 |
Relieving pressure before servicing; high-pressure gases and fluids | Safety practice | Ch. 12 — Accumulators; Pneumatic Power System Maintenance | AF-F Concepts §1 |
R3–R5 |
Fluid storage and handling; cross-contamination; seal and fluid compatibility | — | Ch. 12 — Hydraulic Fluid Contamination; Intermixing of Fluids; Contamination Control; Contamination Check | AF-F Concepts §2 |
S10 |
Locate procedures for checking pneumatic and bleed air overheat warning systems | Overheat detection, and where bleed air comes from | Ch. 17 — Fire Detection/Overheat Systems; Overheat Systems · Ch. 16 — Bleed Air Systems | The check procedure is the AMM's. This is a Locate element |
S13, S14 |
Inspect a hydraulic or pneumatic system for leaks; troubleshoot one | Seals and packings as the usual source, and system maintenance | Ch. 12 — Seals; Seal Materials; Packings; Pneumatic Power System Maintenance; Contamination Check | A weeping seal and a running leak are different findings. The limits are the manufacturer's, and AF-F Concepts §2 is why the distinction matters |
The operative sources
- The aircraft maintenance manual for the depressurization procedure, accumulator precharge, torque values and the approved fluid.
- The safety data sheet for the fluid — phosphate-ester fluids in particular are aggressive to skin, eyes and paint.
- The component manual for seal installation and backup ring orientation.
Fluid families
| --- | --- | --- |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral-based | Typically dyed red | |
| Phosphate-ester | Typically dyed purple |
They are not interchangeable and they require different seal materials (AF-F Concepts §2). Color is a check, not an authority — the aircraft's placard and manual specify the approved fluid.
