Locating water and waste servicing procedures

Terms on this page 4

Dotted in the text; open one for its entry, or see the glossary.

Both skills are Locate and explain. The procedure is the same for each.

The general procedure (S1, S2)

  1. Identify the aircraft and confirm the manual applies — model, effectivity, revision (GEN-B Procedures Procedure 1).
  2. Locate the servicing procedure by chapter and section.
  3. Read the whole procedure, including warnings, cautions and notes.
  4. Explain: the sequence, the quantities and concentrations, the equipment required, the precautions, and what happens to the waste.

Check — state the manual, revision and section. That is what the element assesses.

S1 — lavatory waste system servicing

What the explanation must cover:

  • PPE first — eye and face protection, gloves (AF-O Concepts §3).
  • Draining the tank into approved equipment, never onto the ground.
  • Flushing and rinsing per the procedure.
  • Recharging with the correct concentration of flush additive — concentration matters, and more is not better.
  • Disposal, which is a regulated waste stream (GEN-G Concepts §6).

Check — name the concentration and where the waste goes. Both are part of the procedure and both are commonly omitted from an explanation.

S2 — potable water system servicing

What the explanation must cover:

  • Sanitation — potable water servicing has hygiene requirements, and the equipment used for it is dedicated and never shared with waste servicing.
  • Filling to the specified quantity, and the effect on weight and balance (GEN-C) — water is heavy and it is carried at a known arm.
  • Draining for freeze protection where the aircraft will be cold-soaked.
  • Drain mast heating, and why a frozen mast is a problem.

Check — potable and waste servicing equipment must never be interchanged, and a candidate who does not mention it has explained a procedure without its most important precaution.
