Readings in the sources

6 short readings for GEN-K, a topic at a time: what the test asks, and the sections that cover it. Sign in to tick them off as you read.

Chapter and section verified against FAA-H-8083-30B, 2023 edition, on 28 August 2026. Page numbers are deliberately not cited: they move between printings, and a citation that rots silently is worse than a coarser one that stays true. Checked by our handbook citation check against our index of the handbook's chapters and sections.

A note on the measurement elements

S1, S2 and S3 — using calipers, micrometers and gauges — restate GEN-E K6, S6 and S14. They are taught once, in GEN-E, and assessed in both units. Authoring them separately would produce two accounts of the same material that drift apart on revision.

The two units also classify the same act differently, which is referred for triage review in the delivery-mode analysis.

The operative sources

  • The manufacturer's inspection procedure for any actual inspection, and the penetrant kit manufacturer's instructions for S5 — dwell times and processing steps are theirs.
  • 14 CFR part 91 for what inspections are required, via GEN-I Quick reference.
